Fine crystalline white powder, bitter taste, stable in acidic medium. Slightly soluble in water, practically insoluble in alcohol. Ampicillin – a semisynthetic antibiotic derived by acylation of aminopenicillanic acid. The drug is not destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach, so it is well absorbed when taken orally. Active against gram-positive bacteria, which operates benzylpenicillin. However, in addition, it operates on a number of gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, E. coli, bacillus of Friedlander, Haemophilus influenzae) and is therefore seen as a broad-spectrum antibiotic and is used in diseases caused by mixed infection.
